Frequently asked questions from our cranioplasty patients
Undergoing cranioplasty can be a daunting experience, filled with questions and concerns about the procedure, recovery, long-term outcomes and the life after cranioplasty. At Meticuly, we understand how important it is to feel informed and reassured before making any decisions. That is why we have created this FAQ to address the most common questions from patients, helping you feel more confident about your journey to recovery with our 3D printed titanium mesh cranioplasty implant.
What is cranioplasty and why is it needed?
A: Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure to repair or reshape defects in the skull, often necessary after a traumatic brain injury, tumours, or infections. It involves restoring the missing portion of the skull to protect the brain and improve aesthetics.
What are the traditional techniques for skull reshaping, and what are their disadvantages?
A: Traditionally, surgeons used the patient’s original skull, preserved in a freezer, or moulded acrylic in the operating room. These methods carried a higher risk of infection, and acrylic moulds often did not perfectly match the patient’s skull, leading to longer surgeries and potential complications.
How is Meticuly’s cranioplasty different from traditional methods?
A: Meticuly uses 3D printing and AI technology to create custom titanium implants based on the patient’s CT scan. These implants are designed to match perfectly to the patient’s skull, reducing surgery time and minimising the risk of infection. The use of medical-grade titanium ensures both strength and biocompatibility.
Will my head feel more sensitive to cold with a titanium implant?
A: While titanium conducts temperature better than bone, the body has its own intrinsic mechanisms to regulate heat. Wearing a hat or other head coverings can help maintain warmth, so there is no need for concern about increased sensitivity to cold.
Can the titanium implant rust inside my body?
A: No, medical-grade titanium is corrosion-resistant and will not rust inside the body. Titanium is widely used in medical implants due to its strength and long-term durability, and it can safely remain in the body for a lifetime.
How expensive is cranioplasty surgery, and does insurance cover it?
A: In Thailand, Meticuly’s titanium cranioplasty implants are accepted in the national healthcare scheme, allowing patients to claim reimbursement up to 48,000 baht. Additionally, motor insurance policies may provide compensation for patients who require cranioplasty after road accidents, up to 250,000 baht.
